Delayed device or Guideline-led?

Delayed device and Guideline-led differ most on shape of the rule, their own device and how much. They agree, more than most people expect, on what screens are, whether it applies to the adults and tied to behaviour. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

The two questions are separated completely. Television, the family tablet and the shared computer are ordinary and managed loosely; a personal, pocket, always-on, camera-carrying device is a different thing and is delayed for years past the point it becomes normal. The position travels well because it is collective — it is far easier to hold when other families in the class hold it too, which is exactly what the pledge campaigns exist to do.

What it asks of you

  • Finding other families to hold it with you, or your child holds it alone
  • An answer for the period when their friends are on a group chat they are not
  • Distinguishing the device from the internet, since they will meet the second regardless

You take the question as settled by people who have looked at it properly, and follow the age-banded guidance: none under eighteen months, an hour or so for the under-fives, consistent limits after that. The appeal is that it removes the argument from the household and puts it somewhere external, which is a real benefit and not a lazy one.

What it asks of you

  • Keeping up, since the guidance has moved a lot and will move again
  • Tolerating that the most-quoted numbers are the least evidence-based part of it
  • Enforcing a limit you did not personally set, which is easier in some households and harder in others

Where they differ

Delayed device is the filled marker, Guideline-led the hollow one. Widest difference first.

T2Shape of the rule
a fixed daily limitit depends on the day

Delayed device sits between the two; Guideline-led sits toward a fixed daily limit.

W3Their own device
as late as possibleearly — it is how things are now

Delayed device sits firmly toward as late as possible; Guideline-led sits toward as late as possible.

T1How much
as little as possiblethe amount is not the thing managed

Delayed device sits between the two; Guideline-led sits toward as little as possible.

P3Other families
holding the line whatever others donot wanting them left out

Delayed device sits firmly toward holding the line whatever others do; Guideline-led sits a little toward holding the line whatever others do.

W1Alone or together
watching it togetherwatching alone

Delayed device sits between the two; Guideline-led sits toward watching it together.

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • What screens are. Both sit a little toward entertainment, at best neutral.
  • Whether it applies to the adults. Both sit a little toward the rules are the same for the adults.
  • Tied to behaviour. Both sit a little toward never earned, never removed.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
