RIE / respectful parenting or Unconditional parenting?

RIE / respectful parenting and Unconditional parenting differ most on structure, response to distress and who decides. They agree, more than most people expect, on expectation, praise and rewards and where guidance comes from. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

You treat a very small child as a person who is already competent, and you say what is happening before it happens. Play is uninterrupted and largely unhelped. You wait before stepping in — not because struggle is good for them, but because the struggle is usually theirs to finish. Praise is replaced by description, on the view that a child working out what they think of their own work should not be interrupted by what you think of it.

What it asks of you

  • Slowness — a nappy change becomes a two-minute conversation
  • Sitting on your hands while something takes four times as long
  • Dropping "good job" as a reflex, which is harder than it sounds
  • A predictable enough day that a small child can anticipate it

Kohn's argument is that punishments and rewards are the same tool, and that both teach a child their standing depends on their behaviour. So neither is used: no time-outs, no sticker charts, and no "good job". Problems are solved with the child, out loud, and the test of any parenting move is whether it would still work if the child could see exactly why you were doing it.

What it asks of you

  • Giving up every quick tool at once, with nothing fast to replace them
  • Talking through what a consequence would have settled in ten seconds
  • Standing apart from nursery, school and family, all of whom use both
  • Real bandwidth — this is the most time-expensive row in the instrument

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Expectation. Both sit firmly toward their own pace, no push.
  • Praise and rewards. Both sit firmly toward describing what is there.
  • Where guidance comes from. Both sit a little toward research, books, a named method.
  • Behaviour or feeling. Both sit toward what is underneath it.
  • Risk. Both sit between the two.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
