Free-range or Unconditional parenting?

The difference between Free-range and Unconditional parenting is mostly one axis: response to distress. Free-range sits toward let them work through it; Unconditional parenting sits toward step in and settle them straight away. They agree, more than most people expect, on structure and consistency that can be held. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Children get the roaming range their grandparents had, on the argument that the world is not measurably more dangerous and that constant supervision has costs of its own. Walking to school alone, using a knife, going to the shop — earlier than is now normal, and openly. The position is as much about adult anxiety as about children.

What it asks of you

  • Tolerating other adults' disapproval, which is the real cost and arrives quickly
  • Genuinely letting go, rather than following at a distance
  • Accepting a higher rate of minor injury as the price of competence
  • A neighbourhood, and sometimes a legal jurisdiction, that permits it

Kohn's argument is that punishments and rewards are the same tool, and that both teach a child their standing depends on their behaviour. So neither is used: no time-outs, no sticker charts, and no "good job". Problems are solved with the child, out loud, and the test of any parenting move is whether it would still work if the child could see exactly why you were doing it.

What it asks of you

  • Giving up every quick tool at once, with nothing fast to replace them
  • Talking through what a consequence would have settled in ten seconds
  • Standing apart from nursery, school and family, all of whom use both
  • Real bandwidth — this is the most time-expensive row in the instrument

  • Consistency that can be held. Both sit between the two.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
