Behavioural / structured or Traditional authority?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Traditional authority is mostly one axis: where guidance comes from. Behavioural / structured sits toward research, books, a named method; Traditional authority sits toward instinct and observation. They agree, more than most people expect, on behaviour or feeling, response to distress and physical closeness. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

The oldest position in the instrument and still the most widely held. Respect runs upward, the adults decide, and a child does not need the reasoning to follow the rule. Guidance comes from how you were raised and from the people around you rather than from books. It is rarely chosen deliberately, which is exactly why it is worth naming.

What it asks of you

  • Being comfortable saying "because I said so" and meaning it
  • Holding a position your child's school and friends may contradict
  • Deciding consciously which parts of your own upbringing to keep
  • Separating authority from the physical punishment often bundled with it, which every paediatric body advises against

Where they differ

Behavioural / structured is the filled marker, Traditional authority the hollow one. Widest difference first.

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Behaviour or feeling. Both sit toward what they did.
  • Response to distress. Both sit toward let them work through it.
  • Physical closeness. Both sit toward their own space, early.
  • Bandwidth. Both sit a little toward running on empty.
  • Structure. Both sit toward a predictable rhythm and clear rules.
  • Who decides. Both sit firmly toward the adults decide, and explain.
  • Consequences. Both sit firmly toward the same consequence, every time.
  • Doing it themselves. Both sit between the two.
  • Risk. Both sit between the two.
  • Whose needs count. Both sit toward the adults in the house count too.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
