Behavioural / structured or Low-demand, high-warmth?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Low-demand, high-warmth is mostly one axis: consequences. Behavioural / structured sits firmly toward the same consequence, every time; Low-demand, high-warmth sits firmly toward no imposed consequences at all. They agree, more than most people expect, on bandwidth, doing it themselves and risk. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

Baumrind called this permissive, which has become a word for a failure rather than a name for a position. As a position it is coherent: high warmth, high availability, and a genuine reluctance to impose. Requests are made rather than demands, and most things are negotiable. It also has the clearest evidence against it of any row here on externalising behaviour, and that is stated rather than buried.

What it asks of you

  • Accepting more day-to-day friction, because little is settled in advance
  • Holding warmth steady when very little is being asked in return
  • An honest look at the evidence, which is less favourable here than elsewhere
  • Distinguishing this from having run out of road, which looks identical from outside

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Bandwidth. Both sit between the two.
  • Doing it themselves. Both sit between the two.
  • Risk. Both sit a little toward removing the hazard.
  • How full the week is. Both sit a little toward unstructured time, boredom is fine.
  • Praise and rewards. Both sit toward praising and rewarding freely.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
