Behavioural / structured or Gentle parenting?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Gentle parenting is mostly one axis: behaviour or feeling. Behavioural / structured sits toward what they did; Gentle parenting sits firmly toward what is underneath it. They agree, more than most people expect, on doing it themselves, risk and how full the week is. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

The behaviour is a signal and the signal is what you answer. Punishment is off the table, not as a tactic but as a commitment; what replaces it is staying close while a child is at their worst. It is the most visible approach of the last decade and the least codified — its texts agree completely about punishment and disagree with each other about almost everything else, which is why this row is wide where it is wide.

What it asks of you

  • Regulating yourself first, in the moment you least want to
  • Accepting that the same limit will be tested many more times than it would be elsewhere
  • Considerable time — connection is slower than a consequence
  • Resisting the version of it circulating online, which has no limits in it at all

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Doing it themselves. Both sit between the two.
  • Risk. Both sit a little toward removing the hazard.
  • How full the week is. Both sit a little toward unstructured time, boredom is fine.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
