Behavioural / structured or Free-range?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Free-range is mostly one axis: risk. Behavioural / structured sits a little toward removing the hazard; Free-range sits firmly toward letting them meet it. They agree, more than most people expect, on physical closeness, whose needs count and response to distress. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

Children get the roaming range their grandparents had, on the argument that the world is not measurably more dangerous and that constant supervision has costs of its own. Walking to school alone, using a knife, going to the shop — earlier than is now normal, and openly. The position is as much about adult anxiety as about children.

What it asks of you

  • Tolerating other adults' disapproval, which is the real cost and arrives quickly
  • Genuinely letting go, rather than following at a distance
  • Accepting a higher rate of minor injury as the price of competence
  • A neighbourhood, and sometimes a legal jurisdiction, that permits it

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Physical closeness. Both sit toward their own space, early.
  • Whose needs count. Both sit toward the adults in the house count too.
  • Response to distress. Both sit toward let them work through it.
  • Bandwidth. Both sit a little toward running on empty.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
