Behavioural / structured or Conscious parenting?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Conscious parenting is mostly one axis: behaviour or feeling. Behavioural / structured sits toward what they did; Conscious parenting sits firmly toward what is underneath it. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

The premise is that most of what a parent reacts to is their own history arriving on time, and that the child is not the problem to be solved. Rather than a technique for the child's behaviour it offers a practice for the parent's reaction: notice the trigger, name what it belongs to, and respond to what is actually in front of you. Expectations for who the child should turn out to be are treated as the thing to let go of.

What it asks of you

  • Genuine self-examination, sustained rather than occasional
  • Giving up the ambition to produce a particular kind of adult
  • Tolerating that this offers very little to do when a child is hitting their sibling right now
  • Some support of your own, because the approach asks a great deal of the parent
