Behavioural / structured
A clear rule, a known consequence, no negotiation in the moment.
Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.
Not what it promises
Every approach here works for the families it suits; the useful question is what it costs to run.
- Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
- Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
- Every adult in the house running the same system
- Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more
How it gets misread
Dismissed as authoritarian. It is high-structure and not especially low-warmth: Phelan's position is that the counting exists so the shouting does not have to.
Where it stands
Every position with the source it was read from, and the pale band is how much internal variation the approach genuinely tolerates. A wide band is not vagueness — it means the texts in this family really do disagree with each other about that axis.
